SCHWEIGAARDS GATE 15
«Historiske Tollgaarden»
In the center of Oslo stands the old customs building from 1926. The building is a period-specific public structure associated with the Norwegian Customs Authority and holds both cultural and architectural historical value. For a long time, this was the country's only customs station not connected to a port, but instead oriented towards the railway.
Drawing from this history, the three dining venues on the ground floor have been developed with different concepts related to trains, inspired by the train carriage, the machinery, and the station building.
In line with the building's concept of durable main materials, the floor is a green cast-in-place terrazzo. The ceiling is an acoustic plaster placed between beams, which have been painted green to match the color of the beams. This was done to achieve good acoustics while maintaining a smooth and cohesive ceiling as it has always been.
The restaurant "Smieriet" was inspired by the machinery. Here, we used dark wood and raw steel in the built-in furnishings, such as the bar counter and kitchen front, with clean and simple lines.
The restaurant "Tollmessa" was based on the train carriage, featuring several upholstered seating benches and more detailed decor. Tollmessa houses the service square, which functions as the building's staff restaurant during the day. Here, the fronts and furniture also reference the furnishings that the building once contained.
